Description

Maize Meal is known in South Africa as “Milie Meal” or “Milie Pap.”
When it comes to South Africa’s staple food, “Pap” is a must. It is a porridge like dish made from maize meal, somewhat similar in texture to undercooked rice.

It is a common and essential food on local tables, enriched with 6 vitamins and 2 minerals that help support good health.
However, it has a mild taste, so it is recommended to add some salt for flavor. It is also often enjoyed with “chakalaka,” a spicy relish made from tomatoes, onions, green peppers, and other vegetables, which pairs well with Pap and adds a unique flavor.

African porridge is usually thick and paste like, made from ground African grains, resulting in a dish similar to mashed potatoes.
It is a widely known staple across the African continent. Traditionally, before maize was introduced, it was made from millet or sorghum.
Its consistency can range from soft and smooth to very firm, crumbly, or even couscous like.

It can also be prepared as a softer breakfast porridge by reducing the amount of dry maize meal relative to water, creating a more fluid texture.
For creative cooks, the dry crust left at the bottom of the pot is often enjoyed as a crispy corn snack or chips.

📍 How to use: Add 100g of maize meal to 800ml of hot boiling water, stir for about 10 minutes, and it is ready to serve.
